Comment: “Given 24/7 accessibility to their teams, managers must be mindful how their actions set the tone about being ‘on’ outside of normal work time,” said Link. “Managers should clarify expectations regarding after-hours communication and encourage teams to develop daily routines that respect work and personal boundaries. Imbalance can easily lead to stressed and disgruntled employees, negative health and morale issues, and diminished worker productivity.”

Comment: Britain’s small and medium-size companies (SMEs) are growth engines. By embracing customer satisfaction, employee engagement, and entrepreneurial leadership, these companies considered “progressive.”  In a survey of 1000 managers and employees at SMEs, 61% of respondents mentioned customer satisfaction and 56% mentioned employee engagement and loyalty as hallmarks of progressive companies.  Companies not focused on these issues are seeing falling revenues and increased turnover.

Article: Leaders who inspire: A 21st-century approach to developing your talent
Link: http://www.bain.com/publications/articles/leaders-who-inspire.aspx#.U6G21Ls-AoA.email
Authors:  Mark Horwitch and Meredith Whipple

Comment: The authors argue that the ability to inspire can be taught to leaders. There are three factors driving the need for inspirational leaders. 1. The shift from a product to a customer experience. 2. Collaboration and distributed teams.  3. Focus shifting from extrinsic to intrinsic motivations as the Millennial population becomes a larger part of the workforce.  Currently, most leadership development programs are seen as ineffective.  The authors ask companies to focus on performance skills and inspirational skills separately.

Comment: As Millennials become a larger percentage of the workforce, companies will need to address their need for feedback and recognition.
