Comment: Mr. Smith compares employee engagement to coal mining.  In coal mines, canaries are used to detect poisonous gases and thus alert miners to danger.  With current state of employee engagement, he says that perhaps the canary has stopped due to toxic environments that are the results of company culture.  Addressing these cultural issues would allow the canary to continue to sing.
