I recently completed Kevin Kruse’s new book, 15 Secrets Successful People Know About Time Management: The Productivity Habits of 7 Billionaires, 13 Olympic Athletes, 29 Straight-A Students, and 239 Entrepreneurs. I’m familiar with Mr. Kruse through his work in employee engagement. This book offers the gift of increased productivity which will allow you to devote more time to better engaging each member of your team.

Each of us have the same amount of time and this book answers why some people are able to accomplish more within that time. Below is a look at some of the productivity secrets mentioned. Keep in mind that the high-level overviews below are discussed in more depth and supported by research, interviews, and examples within the book.

Secret #3: Your calendar should be your guide. You must “time block” any task that really matters on your calendar as early as possible in your day. If you cannot commit to what you have scheduled, reschedule it for some other time in your day. Treat everything you schedule as important.

Secret #6: Carry a notebook with you everywhere. Use it to take notes, record thoughts/ideas/dreams, list to-do items, quotes, etc. Get it out of your head and onto paper as soon as you can. Later you can go back and calendar important tasks or reference the information you recorded.

Secret #7: Adopt the 321Zero approach to your email inbox. Designate 3 times a day to review your email. At the designated time, spend 21 minutes trying to get your email inbox to zero. Once you hit the 21-minute mark, regardless of where you are in the process, stop. Close your email until the next scheduled review.

Secret #8: Shorten the time you spend in meetings by starting your meetings on-time, inviting a smaller number of the right people, limiting the time allotted, and having a detailed agenda to follow.

Secret #15: Your productivity is dependent on your health. You must get enough sleep, watch what you eat and drink, exercise, and learn when (times) you are most/least productive. Frequent breaks can actually energize you and help you accomplish more.

Engage Yourself. Give yourself the gift of increased productivity by taking advantage of the “15 Secrets Successful People Know About Time Management.” It is a gift that keeps on giving because your direct reports, your manager, your leadership, your company, your customers, your friends and most of all your family will also benefit.

What productivity secrets do you have to share? How does your company help you become more productive?
