The Type B Manager: Leading Successfully in a Type A WorldIn The Type B Manager: Leading Successfully in a Type A World, author Victor Lipman discusses the impact managers have on employee engagement. “While management has long been considered the realm of Type A individuals—hard-driving, competitive high achievers—all too often these high-intensity traits aren’t effective when it comes to motivating your employees. Many characteristics of Type B individuals—being more relaxed, less competitive, more reflective, slower to anger—can be considered “people skills” that better influence motivation and productivity. And successful management after all is the practice of accomplishing work through other people.”1

After discussing “The Big Picture” about managers and employee engagement, Mr. Lipman offers insights on how Type B Manager qualities can impact employee productivity. “Putting It Together,”  he concludes by focusing on how Type A and Type B Managers can enhance their management abilities by adopting some of each other’s characteristics.

The book provides 29 Management Insights. Below are eight of my favorite insights from the book:

“As a manger, you have an enormous amount of power. Most often you are the single most important influence on how motivated and productive your employees will be.”2

“Type B’s often have natural advantages when it comes to motivating employees by their relaxed, inviting way of taking time to get to know them as individuals and gaining insights into what they value.”3

“An intuitive, inclusive Type B approach is helpful in understanding interpersonal dynamics and guiding team members to work together for the common good.”4

“Whether they are a Type A or Type B personality, the best managers are excellent leaders, and the best leaders are excellent managers. The separation between the two fields has today become artificially vast.”5

“Employee development is a widely ignored managerial function. Type B managers who take a personal interest in their employees and are attuned to their abilities will find the time spent on development activities to be an investment rewarded by appreciation and motivation.”6

“Handling conflict effectively is on e of a manager’s most challenging and critical roles. Once Type B managers overcome their natural tendency to avoid conflict, they may find themselves surprisingly adept at handling it.”7

“ A well-liked Type B manager who effectively holds his or her employees accountable will be a well-respected Type B manager. Without firm accountability, management can’t achieve the results it requires.”8

“An accurate view of yourself and your environment is integral to management success. Without it, you’ll always be flying blind, lacking a compass. Type B managers who know their business and have a realistic perspective on their strengths and weaknesses are well positioned to lead effectively.”9

As a current or potential manager, I encourage you to explore the other insights in The Type B Manager: Leading Successfully in a Type A World.  This book offers a wealth of information that will help you better engage your current or future employees.
