6 Ways to Better Engagement: # 2 Sleep

Engagement starts with sleep.
Sleep isn’t just personal self -care. It’s a performance multiplier . A rested brain is sharper,
more creative, and better at managing stress. The National Sleep Foundation estimates that lack
of sleep costs U.S. companies $63 billion in lost productivity each year (Journal of Sleep , “A
Good Night’s Sleep Helps With Job Performance ,” 2016 ).
When managers shortchange their own rest, they show up with less focus, energy, and patience.
A well -rested manager makes sharper decisions, handles stress more effectively, and
creates space for better interactions with their people.
Everyday Moves
Set a consistent sleep schedule. Going to bed and waking up at the same time trains your body
and boosts overall energy.
Build a wind -down routine. Replace screens with a short walk, light reading, or decaf tea to
signal your brain it’s time to rest.
Create a sleep -friendly environment. Keep the room cool, dark, and quiet. Leave phones
outside the bedroom if possible.
Experiment with short naps. A 20 –30 minute nap can restore focus, and it’s no longer taboo.
Companies like Google have installed nap pods for this reason ( Inc., “6 Companies Where It’s
OK to Nap,” 2015 ).

When you’re well rested, you think more clearly, regulate emotions more effectively, and
engage more fully with others. Your people benefit not just from your sharper decisions, but
also from your calmer presence.

What’s one step you’ll take this week to improve your sleep , and how can you encourage
your people to do the same?
